Doing Good in Christ's Name

[Written Especially for Young People]

A Young woman who possessed unusual gifts, which she naturally desired to use effectively, was called upon for special service in her home—attending to certain duties which seemed at the time compulsory. Because of an eager wish to be at work in other directions, she chafed somewhat at these enforced activities, much as she wanted to be loving and kind. The home work seemed to her humdrum as compared with what she would have chosen to do, and she found herself yielding to the arguments of deferred hope and disappointment.

One morning she did what many heavy-hearted people have done before her—turned to her Bible for a word of comfort and guidance. Directly, the book opened to Acts, where she read the words spoken of Christ Jesus, "that great shepherd of the sheep," as he was so well named by the writer to the Hebrews, as one "who went about doing good." Instantly the girl's face brightened and with a long sigh of relief she remarked, "Why, that is what I am doing right now, and can keep on doing;" and then she added softly, "and in Christ's name." Rejoicingly she set about the daily tasks, bringing fresh courage and inspiration to the one to whom she ministered. In "Science and Health with Key tothe Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy has written (p. 55), "Whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing." This is the reward.

Abilities and talents are surely to be used, and will be, in the highest possible way, when one realizes that they are from God, and therefore to be used in His service. One simply needs to practice putting God first, Love first, letting God protect and utilize that which is His. This kind of development in the life of the girl referred to proved a blessing, not only to herself but to many others; for at a time of seeming crisis she had been called on for special service, using every gift she possessed to bless and strengthen those in great need of what she had to give.
