A Universal Friend

EACH weekday there arrives at our home a friend whose coming is the quiet and unobtrusive entrance of good. Our guest is The Christian Science Monitor.

Let us suppose that we are entertaining a much-loved human friend. Do we allow him to remain long in our home with his overcoat on and his good news unimparted? Are we not eager to give him a place in our home, to listen to what he has to tell us, and to receive joyfully the gifts he brings? Are we always as hospitable to our friend in the brown jacket, The Christian Science Monitor?

Just as the door of our home must be opened to admit a guest, so the door of welcome must be opened wide to admit the Monitor as a regular visitor. This is accomplished through the grateful recognition of it as a newspaper expressing good. We are all eager to avail ourselves of Love's gifts of spiritual good, but we cannot do so until we are awake to recognize and accept them. The Monitor expresses good, but there are specious arguments of the carnal mind which would delay our acquaintance with or separate us from this friend. When its mission is understood, however, nothing can separate us from a right interest in it.
