For some time before becoming interested in Christian Science, I had been in an attitude of mental protest toward all systems of religion. I was taught as a child to reverence the Bible, and I did love it, but as I grew older I found no satisfaction in it and much that seemed contradictory. What God was and where He was I saw no possible means of knowing, but I was sure there was a way out of the difficulties which beset mankind, and that some time, somewhere, I should find it. More than fifteen years ago, while visiting in Chicago, I heard something of Christian Science. Later on, I wrote to a cousin in that city, asking for treatment, and was healed of a chronic trouble from which I had suffered for years. This healing, however, was not permanent, perhaps because it was not appreciated, for I had no conception then of what Jesus meant when he said, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou last sent." Over eleven years ago, in the depths of despair, I turned to Christian Science in earnest, and commenced the study of Science and Health in connection with the Bible. Christian Science has explained Jesus' teaching to me; it has explained and made valuable the Bible; through it I have learned that God is divine Principle, all-inclusive—that the truth can be understood, defined, and demonstrated, that God is indeed omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient.

Before receiving help from Christian Science, I was almost constantly under the care of a physician, but since learning that the law of God is the law of harmony, the law of Life, the law of perfection to man His spiritual idea, that it is available in every hour of need and when understood and faithfully applied will cure disease of every kind, I have proved it for myself, and have been healed of two chronic ailments for which, under materia medica, I was treated without permanent benefit and with no hope of it. The healing was not accomplished quickly; it unfolded with my understanding, but I know that it is an eternal healing, that freedom which is knowledge of divine Truth. Nothing that the world has to offer could have given it to me, and nothing can take it from me. I am well and happy because Christian Science heals and satisfies.

I am indeed grateful to the one who founded the Christian Science movement; through whose selfless life the demonstrable knowledge of God has been revealed to this age; and when the straight and narrow way seems difficult, I think of the thorny path she has traveled to prove to the world that there is but one power and that this power is Love; and to prove that all right action based upon this knowledge—no matter what the opposition may be—must result in the increase of harmony, for "the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more unto the perfect day."—BERTHA B. BUTLER, Columbus, Ohio.
