[Written for the Sentinel.]

MY WORK IS AT HAND.

Why should I wish to face some problem great,
As though to reach the sooner heaven's gate?
For, close at hand, I see there lie in wait
Small problems still unsolved, which hide the way
That leads to larger tasks and brighter day.
Why long for foreign fields and victory,
When yet I have not faced the surging sea
Of stormy thoughts at home? Why vainly try
To push these back, thus to make place
For problems which as yet I cannot face?
Henceforth my work shall be to watch within,
To drive away each erring thought of sin,
And let no thought of evil enter in.
For thus shall I make strong the sword and spear
To vanquish every foe, both far and near.
