Columbus (O.) Dispatch

I noticed by the morning papers that the Rev. T. L. Lowe, in a speech before the Central Ministers' Association, made a number of statements concerning Christian Science and Christian Scientists on which I am certain he must be misinformed. I have investigated the subject superficially, and think the Rev. Mr. Lowe is mistaken in saying that Christian Science is silent in face of the question, What shall I do to be saved? If I am not mistaken, the "Science" is predicated on the supposition that to be a Christian—that is, to be clean morally and to have one's life fashioned as much as possible after the life of the great Master—is the first requisite of health, or of the power to heal. He also says that Christian Science has no missionaries, but it is a well-known fact that the sect has grown both rapidly and remarkably, and that even Mark Twain, attacking Christian Science, said that if it continued to grow in the future as it had in the past, in fifty years there would be no churches except Christian Science. Isn't it possible, then, that Christian Scientists have taken to themselves personally, more seriously than have members of other churches, the injunction to go into the world and preach the gospel—in short, that they are doing more individual work, and that by their works their Cause has come to be known and has grown?

May it not also be true that they do their philanthropic work personally instead of collectively? How does the number of tithers among Christian Scientists compare with the number in other sects? Do Christian Scientists have church raffles, church fairs, strawberry socials, and send their children out to pester the neighbors to buy tickets, or do they support their own churches?

What do Christian Scientists do for the poor? I don't know. Will some Christian Scientist please answer these questions? Did Mr. Lowe speak after investigating carefully, or did he take a great deal for granted?
