THE SURE FOUNDATION

In the construction of every large building one of the first and most important steps to be taken into consideration is its foundation. The proposed site for the building is examined, borings taken, and in many cases huge pilings are driven down to hard rock on which to rest the foundation and make sure it has the staying quality to carry the weight of the structure to be erected. Without a sure foundation the building would settle, the walls crack, and perhaps the entire structure be ruined. With the foundation sure, the workmen can proceed to build with the utmost confidence, stone upon stone, up to any desired height.

In Christian Science we are engaged in the building of a temple,—a "structure of Truth and Love" (Science and Health, p. 583),—and the first and most important step in the beginning of this work is to be sure that our foundation is divine Principle. We need to dig well beneath the surface of mortal material sense and find the spiritual cause, the center and circumference of all things; to study well the Science of being, that we may be equipped with that spiritual intuition which will enable us to detect any spurious material (mortal beliefs) that might gain entrance into this spiritual building. In the understanding of God as All-in-all,—Mind, Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love, the only cause and creator, and man as His likeness,—we have a foundation on which we can proceed to build for time and eternity, and day by day we shall find for our use the "living stones" without flaw or blemish.

With line upon line, and precept upon precept, our goodly temple will go up and up, till it reaches divine heights; and though storms may beat against this house it will not fall, for its foundation rests upon the rock, Christ, Truth. If we would not have our work to do over again, let us examine and test the foundation on which we are building, for we read that "other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Christ Jesus." We also read in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy: "The testimony of the material senses is neither absolute nor divine. I therefore plant myself unreservedly on the teachings of Jesus, of his apostles, of the prophets, and on the testimony of the Science of Mind. Other foundations there are none. All other systems—systems based wholly or partly on knowledge gained through the material senses—are reeds shaken by the wind, not houses built on the rock" (p. 269).
