As a child I knew I had to be a lawyer when I grew up, and in my boyhood the profession acquired a peculiar fascination for me. The model I had before me was that of the sarcastic cross-examining counsel, and I remember one of my greatest pleasures toward the end of my school career was the making of a terse translation of Cicero's Orations against Catiline, which I had as a subject of an examination. I thus unconsciously acquired a habit of sarcasm and criticism, which was backed up by ambition and what I then considered a most excellent quality—determination. This habit of sarcasm and criticism so grew upon me that after I entered the business world and found that few of the expectations and ambitions I had formed were realizable, I rapidly degenerated into a cynic and a slave to tobacco. Added to this I had indifferent health. When at school I went in greatly for cross-country and long-distance running, of which I was very fond, but toward the end of my school days I strained myself. My heart troubled me, and I was obliged to wear elastic stockings on both legs constantly, besides other bandages, on account of supposed weakness of the veins. Without the support of the stockings I had difficulty in standing for any length of time.

I was in this condition when I heard of Christian Science. When I first began to read the text-book I was not aware that the use of tobacco was not in harmony with Christian Science, and had I known it at that time, my condition of thought was such that I should probably not have continued the study. I was quickly able to dispense with the wearing of the elastic stockings and bandages, and as the result of Christian Science treatment I am now in perfect health, being able to stand, walk, and endure fatigue as others can. I have also been healed of a chronic bowel trouble, and the desire to smoke has completely left me. I have found Christian Science to be of the very greatest help to me in my business. My work is now done better, more quickly, and more accurately, and to this I should also add that it is done from a higher standpoint.

The physical healing, however, I count as nothing compared with the change which has come to my thought and the spiritual uplift I have received. I am unable to express sufficiently my gratitude for the Christian Science publications, and specially would I mention The Christian Science Monitor, which has broadened my thought and given me an entirely different view of home and international politics. It has also been a great help in showing me how to introduce Christian Science more into my daily work. I also desire to express in writing my deep gratitude to and love for our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.
