Previous to taking up the study of Christian Science, I...
Previous to taking up the study of Christian Science, I had been a semiinvalid for seven or eight years, during which time I was constantly under a doctor's care. I tried everything, even to nature studies and rigid dieting. When I commenced to take medical treatment, it was for a slight organic derangement; but I steadily grew worse, and each year brought new diseases, along with the old, until I found myself a victim of chronic illness of different kinds, including nervous and stomach trouble, heart disease and functional irregularities, pain in the head, etc. The backaches were so constant and severe that at times it seemed impossible to bear the suffering any longer. One doctor told me it was natural for me to have backache, when he found he could not even relieve me.
During one of my heart attacks I had four doctors at my bedside; and they all agreed to try a hypodermic injection to arouse me, which the torture did. When I was permitted to get out of bed I could hardly walk, because of the terrible pain in my thigh. On examination the doctors found that they had injected the solution in the muscle. I held very great fear of this trouble, and so did the doctors. Materia medica offered little or no hope of healing the cavity, which soon was very deep and getting more so. The cavity was burned daily for nearly six months, and about this time, when my funds were nearly exhausted, a lady invited me to attend a Christian Science service with her Wednesday evening. I accepted her invitation, and about the first thing I understood was that here were people who knew God to be all good. I eagerly accepted that much, and in a little while I heard two testimonies of healing of cases similar to my own. The cases were those of men who had been in the Civil War, and who were healed through the reading of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. This was over three years ago, and I enjoyed the meeting so much that I have attended regularly ever since. I do not remember anything of the angry-looking cavity since that time. I must have been healed right then and there, and now there is hardly a scar to be seen.
For the healing of remaining ailments I engaged the services of a Christian Science practitioner, and in two weeks the backache had disappeared, the functional inaction was overcome, and my thought was so uplifted that I undertook to try to help myself. My healing was slow, covering more than a year; for which I am now grateful, as my earnest effort made me better acquainted with God, the All-in-all. Sometimes it seemed as though I never should be entirely healed, but I knew that Christian Science is of God, and that it could heal. It was I who needed more of the love which makes perfect.
