The statement that Christian Scientists do not believe in...
Charlotte (N. C.) News
The statement that Christian Scientists do not believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God would indicate that the speaker is as limited in his knowledge of what Christian Science teaches as he is in his acquaintance with Christian Scientists. Among the tenets of the Christian Science church are the following: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness. ... We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Wayshower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death" (Science and Health, p. 497).
There are thousands of people of average honesty and intelligence who, brought up in orthodox churches, have afterward accepted the teachings of Christian Science and still affirm their belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Now, would it not be fair and reasonable to accept their statement as to what they believe, rather than the statement of those who show by their writings and utterances that they are not only misinformed as to the teachings of Christian Science but are prejudiced against it? Jesus himself stated what the proof of those that believed on him should be when he said, "And these signs shall follow them that be that believe; In my name they shall cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
Christian Science does not magnify the devil into a god, but on the contrary teaches just what Jesus taught when he said of evil, or the devil, that "he was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is liar, and the father of it." Christian Scientists refuse to believe in any person, place, or thing, as an eternal reality, with such a character as this and it ought to be evident that what Jesus called a murderer and liar could not have a place in God's creation, when everything which He created was declared by Him to be good, and man in His image and likeness. It is upon this teaching that Christian Science denies the power of the devil or evil, and this is in accordance with what Jesus meant when he said, "Ant ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
