INSTANTANEOUS HEALING

When the seventy returned to Jesus and told him of the wonderful works which they had performed, Jesus made this remark, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." It is impossible to understand this passage of Scripture without a knowledge of its spiritual meaning as revealed in Christian Science.

We first read of Satan in Genesis as the tempter, the lying serpent, saying, "Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." This is the first record of the temptation to know evil. St. James says, "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." The word "devil" and the "evil one" are used in the Bible as synonymous with the word "Satan." As explained in Christian Science, the "devil" is not a hideous human being, but the specific term for the "one evil" or the "knowledge of evil" or the "knowing of evil." Since evil is the very opposite of good, it includes everything that is not of God, not good. It includes sin, discord. and also sickness, for no one will admit that sickness is good. Therefore, Satan, devil, evil, sin, discord, sickness are the "one evil," or "the evil one" (Science and Health, p. 16), against which we are warned.

On page 590 of Science and Health the kingdom of heaven is defined as the "reign of harmony in divine Science;" and Jesus said, "The kingdom of heaven is within you," therefore the kingdom of heaven must be the consciousness of absolute harmony. When we become conscious only of harmony, then discord, sickness, sin, evil, devil, or Satan, drops from our consciousness just as darkness vanishes when the light appears; and whenever an instantaneous healing, whether of sin or of sickness, takes place in Christian Science, these words of Jesus are renewedly fulfilled, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."
