I came into a knowledge of Christian Science at the age of eighteen, not through healing but simply by reading its literature. About a year before this, my sister had been healed of nervous troubles by reading Science and Health. During the following winter, while she was away from home, I became very much interested in revival meetings which were held in the country near our home. I went night after night, working and praying for relief from a sense of worldliness and sin. One evening I seemed to be filled with a consciousness of peace and assurance, and the thought came immediately with it, that God can heal. The next day I picked up a Christian Science Journal, and for several hours everything else was forgotten, so deeply interested was I in its contents, and from that time I have never doubted that Christian Science is the truth. I then felt that I must have the time all to myself to learn more about this new-found treasure. I wrote my sister that I was now ready for Science and Health, and when a copy came I could hardly read it fast enough. For days I was on the mountain-top. I had such a feeling of humility and gratitude for the privilege of being one to whom the word of Truth had then come (at that time I knew no other Scientist than my sister and there were none nearer than eighty miles), and when I thought of the many sincere servants of God, devout men of pure lives, who had not been able to find this saving truth that seemed to have come so easily to me, I wondered. Later, in studying the Bible I found the Master's words, "For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them."
I soon had some physical demonstrations which proved the power of Truth, and from the moment of my first decision I have never taken a drop of medicine. Once, while teaching far from home, I noticed that my thumb was paining me, and later I found that a felon had grown upon it. This was healed by Christian Science, and during the healing I did not lose a moment's sleep, and I used my hand as I needed to, without pain, even playing the piano for choir practice. I am very grateful to God for this truth, and to Mrs. Eddy for a life so pure as to let the light shine through.
