Daily lowegian and Citizen
In an issue of your paper a writer on the International Sunday School Lessons referred to the healing of the impotent man by Paul, and assumed that because the word "treatment" was not used in recounting the man's restoration to health, the healing was quite different from what he chose to call "the performances of Christian Science." Evidently his comment was based on a misconception of what a Christian Science treatment is; and for the information of your readers I should like to say that such a treatment in no wise differs from that which accomplished the healing mentioned.
Unquestionably it was Paul's understanding of God's ability to destroy all discord which enabled him to heal the impotent man; and such a demonstration of God's allness was made possible through "continuing instant in prayer," to use the apostle's own words concerning efficiency in Christian service. In another circumstance, not far remote from the one your contributor referred to, the statement reads, "At midnight Paul and Silas prayed;" and it is then recorded that immediately they and their fellow prisoners were loosed from their bands. The prayer of understanding as to God's infinite power and gracious willingness to free men from the bondage of sin, disease, and all discord was the prayer taught by Christ Jesus and employed by the early Christians. And such prayer constitutes a Christian Science treatment.
In full harmony with your contributor's statement that the principal work of the early Christian church was to benefit men spiritually, Mrs. Eddy likewise says of Christian Science on page 2 of her book "Rudimental Divine Science," "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science." Then she declares "the emphatic purpose of Christian Science" to be "the healing of sin."
