Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication for the Year Ended September 30, 1928

Michigan.

Last fall an official of the American Medical Association made an address before the Detroit Kiwanis Club, in the course of which he departed from his announced topic to denounce Mrs. Eddy and the healing works of Christian Science. In the club's Bulletin for the following week, the only notice of the physician's address was comprised in this tribute to our Leader: "Dr. — is a clever talker but deficient in wisdom, courtesy, and diplomacy. . . . He evidently has been grossly misinformed in regard to a certain great religious leader whom the world has generally recognized as one of the greatest women in all history—a woman who established a tremendous religious organization that has had a phenomenal growth covering a testing period of more than half a century. Facts in the matter are easily obtainable."

A complaint was made to this office that a textbook on personal hygiene used in the Detroit public schools contained objectionable references to Christian Science. When this was brought to the notice of the city superintendent of schools, he issued instructions to discontinue the use of this book, and stated that he quite agreed with us that it was not the type of book for general use in the public schools, and the chapter containing the references to Christian Science not the type of chapter to be included in a textbook on hygiene. He also said, "It has always been our policy to teach morals and character, but never religious beliefs."
