In a letter which appeared in your issue of the 13th inst., a writer says that the lecturer on Christian Science, reported in the Weekly News, makes the claim for Mrs. Eddy that "she was the first to perceive and preach that there is no such thing as matter; it is only a belief. The claim is too absurd for words. Indian philosophers have believed and taught it for untold ages."

The point your correspondent would appear to have missed is this: the lecturer was speaking as a Christian to Christians about Christianity, that is, about the teachings of Christ Jesus; and so the claim made is perfectly sound.

Mrs. Eddy was the first to perceive that, as Jesus taught, since God is infinite Spirit, it inevitably follows that God's creation, including man made in His image and likeness, is purely spiritual, and therefore that the material universe is but a delusion of the physical senses.
