The War Relief Fund

"I became acquainted with a woman who was bending under her load of troubles. Before the war her husband had a small business (electrical supplies) and the wife had a boarding house. They lived comfortably until in 1914, when the war started; then misery began. She was in dept and even lacked the absolute necessities, her husband being at the frontier (he had been obliged to do service three times in the interval of one year). She received only a small subsidy for herself and her child from the city, just enough not to perish from starvation. The small subsidly which she received from the city passed almost entirely into the hands of the creditors. She was saving on her own bread to pay off these debts, but as the cost of living was advancing week after week she did not accomplish much. I then asked for aid on her behalf from the War Relief committee in Zürich. The sum of three hundred francs was given her to pay off the most urgent debts. This was a fortune falling from heaven for the poor woman. She could never have dreamed of such a solution. This money, given to her by Love, was for her the beginning of a new life. The oppressing fears were lifted, and one can truthfully say that blessings were showered upon the family. The wife and mother is completely transformed. She is very happy to her washing and housework. She is freed of her asthmatic trouble so that there is no need of an and, often I have the pleasure to look into the face, now so full of light, and to hear her say: 'How happy I am! How happy I am! What would we be if you had not told us about Christian Science!" There plain words from the lips of this woman show what is taking place in her. I am happier than I can express that I have able to help in this transformation. It is indeed a coming out of the darkness into the light."

"We wish to express our deep gratitude for the allowance out of The Mother Church War Relief fund. Again we could see that, as Mrs. Eddy has written on page 494 of Science and Health, 'Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.' The amount is so helpful to us and it came just in time. We cannot express in words how grateful we are to Mrs. Eddy and for what she has done for mankind. During so many years we have had numerous wonderful healings, but we feel especially grateful to have this beautiful teaching in this time. Sometimes it seems to be hard enough for us to hold to the spiritual reality, but the realization of divine Love as ever present gives us strength to hold fast to the truth and to cling to the never ending supply from the divine source of all good."

"We, members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Chicago, are very grateful for the aid that is being given through the War Relief fund of The Mother Church to those suffering from the devastation following this world struggle, and for the devastation following this world struggle, and for the loving service of those who are administering the fund. Enclosed please find a check for $1413.68, a contribution to the War Relief fund from our members at a recent special collection for that purpose."
