In an article entitled "How Nervousness Can Be Healed"...
Jarlsberg and Larvik (Norway) Amtstidende
In an article entitled "How Nervousness Can Be Healed" it is maintained that "suggestion, belief, is the supporting and operative power" in Christian Science healing.
Mental suggestion is synonymous with hypnotism, and is the control of one human mind over another. Suggestion is spoken of in the Bible as sorcery, the casting out of devils by Beelzebub. When Jesus was charged with this method he said he cast out devils "with the finger of God," and in Matthew's gospel he is recorded as saying, "If I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." Christian Science is wholly founded upon the teaching and life of Jesus, and can heal only through the spiritual understanding of the unchangeable law of God. Jesus said, "If ye continue in my word, ... ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Suggestion does not lead to freedom, but to bondage. Christian Science teaches that it is the human mortal mind which is the cause of pain and fear, and these evils can be healed only through the understanding of the omnipotence and omnipresence of divine Mind. In the first epistle of John we read, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear."
A Christian Science practitioner wishes to talk to his patient in order to explain to him what Christian Science is and to teach him how to help himself. Christian Science treatment is a help to self-help. As far as the treatment is concerned, it makes no difference whether the patient is present or absent, and the absent patient does not know when the treatment takes place. Jesus has himself indicated this method in the healing of the centurion's servant and the daughter of the woman of Canaan.
