I came into Christian Science for physical healing, after having suffered for many years from gall-stones, rheumatism, and other ailments. Everything possible in a material way had been tried, and at last two operations were performed. While I was lying at the hospital, given up by the attending physicians, the thought came to me of a healing of which I had heard and which had been brought about through Christian Science treatment. I felt that if I could only understand how this healing was accomplished, I also would be healed. I therefore called for a Christian Science practitioner, and absent treatment was given me.

In four weeks I left the hospital on a stretcher, but for four months was not able to lift my head from the pillow, as my suffering was more intense after the operation than before, the attacks occurring with greater frequency. All this time, however, I studied the Lesson-Sermons and earnestly tried to understand Christian Science. I continued to take treatment, with the result that rheumatism and many other ailments were overcome, but the gall-stones, from which I so desired to be free, were the last to yield.

My family and friends had ceased to look for my recovery, and I suffered so much it seemed as if it would be a relief to die. One Sunday morning my daughter was reading the lesson on "Matter" to me, and more to please her than myself I was listening, when these words seemed to rouse me: "The divine Mind, which forms the bud and blossom, will care for the human body, even as it clothes the lily; but let no mortal interfere with God's government by thrusting in the laws of erring, human concepts" (Science and Health, p. 62).
