Our Beloved Leader

Christian Scientists love, honor, and revere their Leader, Mrs. Eddy, because in the face of the most bitter opposition, ridicule, and persecution, confronted with the most complex and confusing problems, she never faltered in her righteous stand for Truth. Steadfastly relying upon infinite Mind for guidance, strength, understanding, and spiritual vision, she cherished the tiny spark of infinite Truth which at first dawned upon her consciousness, until finally, as the result of her faithfulness and consecrated labors, it became a great light, dispelling with its radiant beams the darkness of materiality, sin, disease, and death.

In her elucidation of Christian Science Mrs. Eddy recognized that she was only the human channel through which Truth could be unfolded and made manifest to humanity. She wrote: "It was not myself, but the divine power of Truth and Love, infinitely above me, which dictated 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.' I have been learning the higher meaning of this book since writing it" (Miscellany, p. 114). Scholars, poets, statesmen, philosophers, philanthropists, the great men and women of this age as well as multitudes from the ordinary walks of life, have found in Mrs. Eddy's writings such a clear and satisfying explanation of the Christ-method of healing that they have been enabled to make use of this scientific mental process in the solving of their manifold daily problems. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" the subject of God's healing power is so clearly and fully explained that simply through the study of this text-book the healing light of Truth has entered many a consciousness, clearing away the clouds of doubt, fear, and all erroneous thinking, thereby bringing surcease of sorrow, sickness, sin, and suffering.

Edgar Allan Poe has written: "The demands of Truth are severe. She has no sympathy with myrtles. It is but making her a flaunting paradox, to wreathe her in gems and flowers." This, however, can never be said of the truth as portrayed by Mrs. Eddy, for she has clothed her thought in strong, forceful, and practical language. Although filled with poetic imagery, her writings portray the truth in a way possible only to one inspired to tell the things of God's kingdom. Her skill was greater than was ever dreamed of by the poet, for through her writings, all aglow with divine tenderness, she has impressed upon the thought of this age the healing and saving power of God, infinite Mind. Mrs. Eddy taught her followers that in order to understand Truth they must demonstrate it in daily thoughts and deeds. "Truth is revealed," she writes on page 174 of Science and Health. "It needs only to be practised." Ever a student of her own writings, she directed her followers to fix their gaze not upon her human personality but upon the teachings of Truth.
