I feel the time has come when I must give a written testimony...

I feel the time has come when I must give a written testimony of the great blessings that have come to me through Christian Science. Life's problem was a difficult one for me to solve, for according to mortal sense I was born deformed, both hips being dislocated, with consequent curvature of the spine. I never could reconcile the teachings that God was a loving Father with the statement that He would deliberately deform a little child for some unknown good purpose.

In 1901 my physical condition grew much worse. Contraction of the muscles set in, followed by softening of the bone, and for the greater part of six years I was either stretched on my back or trying to walk with crutches or a stick. Nearly four of those years I spent in a nursing home, where I underwent seven operations; but in spite of all the skill and kindness of the doctors, in spite of all the love and care bestowed on me, I left there in 1907 with the possibility of having to return for still another operation. Varicose veins, lung trouble, and water on the knee were among the things now added to the original trouble, until I was so physically and mentally weary that I used to long to pass away in my sleep.

Here Christian Science found me, bringing the glorious teaching that God is indeed Love; that He had not sent this suffering, and that as none of it was of His creation it had no reality. Gradually, through the loving help and teaching given me, I began to get a truer concept of God, and as I grew in understanding my healing came. I had been condemned never to play tennis again, but just to be able to get up and down stairs like other people, for by this time one leg was so much shorter than the other that I had to have a two-inch extension on the heel of one boot. Now I not only am able to play tennis, but when necessary can do quite useful housework. I am able to walk greater distances than ever before in my life, can swim, and once again can ride a bicycle.
