THE LECTURES
A well-attended lecture on Christian Science was given at the Loomer Opera House Monday evening, April 3. The lecturer, Bliss Knapp, was introduced by W. L. Best, second reader of the church, who said in part,—
All Christianity recognizes two great lawgivers, the Hebrew prophet and the "man of Galilee." What church is there that does not teach the Ten Commandments? What church does not emphasize the commands of Jesus, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind," and "thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." In demonstration of these great laws, Jesus lived the most exemplary life humanity has ever witnessed, living as never man lived, speaking as never man spake. In the ages intervening between these two great lawgivers, pharisaical creeds and doctrines caused mankind to forget that the fundamentals of life, health, and happiness are dependent on God. Jesus' teachings, reiterating those of the early prophets and demonstrating them as never before, were more than a perverse people could withstand; consequently he and his followers were bitterly persecuted. For some two or three hundred years the early Christians practised spiritual healing of both mind and body; then, midst the persecutions that followed, spiritual healing was abandoned.
Many times the heathen ask our missionaries if they believe that Christ healed the sick and raised the dead. Invariably the reply is, "Yes." "Then why do your people get sick?" they ask. "And when they are sick, why don't you heal them?" Christians everywhere preach the words of Jesus, "Greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." Do they believe them? Mrs. Eddy, through Christian Science, has made plain the teachings and acts of the Nazarene, and we are assembled tonight to hear them briefly explained.—Correspondence.
