A FREE-WILL OFFERING

It has been requested that some definite word be given through the Sentinel in regard to contributions to the proposed memorial to Mrs. Eddy which was announced in this column a few weeks ago; namely, some indication as to how large an amount individuals may contribute, and as to the total sum that will be required.

It will readily be admitted, we think, that the first of these questions cannot be answered by one person for another. The entire proposition is one wherein individual desire and individual capacity must govern. There has been a very general desire expressed for a proper and dignified memorial to our Leader, not because stone or marble is necessary to the preservation of her fame, but because of the opportunity which would thus be given to those who wish to pay such tribute of love and gratitude as they may in this way to the one who has done more for them than has any other person in the whole of their experience. Who can say for another what contribution will fittingly express the measure of this love and gratitude?

We are taught in Christian Science that "to keep the commandments of our Master and follow his example, is our proper debt to him and the only worthy evidence of our gratitude for all that he has done" (Science and Health, p. 4), and Christian Scientists are fully aware that the highest measure of their gratitude for the blessings which have come to them through the self-sacrificing labors of our Leader is to be shown by daily and hourly demonstration of the truth she taught, by whole-hearted consecration to the upbuilding of the cause which is her true monument. And yet, through this memorial, they desire to give concrete expression, in some measure, to the love and honor so freely accorded our revered Leader; they would say with David, "All things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee," for they realize that under the divine Giver they owe all they have of health and happiness to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
