Christian Scientists do not employ hypnotism

Montrose (Col.) Press

Christian Scientists do not employ hypnotism. Hypnotism and Christian Science are antipodal terms. Christian Science employs prayer to God, and prayer only, as a means of healing the sick. Hypnotism is the use of one human will to control the mentality of another. To suggest to a patient by persistent mental declarations that he is not sick, does not really heal him. He may be deceived by the false declarations so long as his thought is controlled by the mesmeric influence of another, but the healing is not permanent, and the usual result is that the patient lapses into a worse state than before.

Christian Science leads men to God, the giver of all good. It follows the teachings and practice of Jesus, who ever declared that all power came from God. Jesus never recognized hypnotism, never employed it. The effect of Christian Science treatment is to lead the patient into the freedom of "the sons of God," and in this regenerative process neither human will, hypnotism, nor mesmerism has any part. By Christian Science prayer the patient is lifted out of the control of the evil beliefs that depleted and weakened him, whether those beliefs be sickness, poverty, or sin. The Christian Scientist sees God as infinite, divine Love, who sends no evil on His children, and whom to know aright destroys all ills that flesh is heir to.
