It is with the deepest thankfulness that I acknowledge the many blessings which Christian Science has brought into my life. I therefore add my testimony, with the sincere hope that it may encourage others to take up the study of this glorious truth which brings us out of all bondage. I began to look into Christian Science about six years ago. I had heard of it some time before this, but did not inquire about it, as I did not think it could help me, being hopeless about everything. My health was getting worse and worse, and was causing great anxiety to every one. I was so wretched that I often prayed I might die. All the doctors to whom I went were most kind, and I am sure did their utmost to try to relieve my sufferings. I tried the German "mud baths" for two years, and went to the best doctors there. I used to suffer terribly with my spine on and off for over eighteen years. I had tried many different remedies, but none had any lasting benefit. For three years I had a bad attack of pleurisy each winter, besides frequent and severe colds; then I was told that my lungs were in a bad state and my heart very weak; that I ought to be very careful, and winter in some warm climate. All my life I had been a sufferer from very severe headaches, and for many years from sleeplessness.
When I first began to study Mrs. Eddy's book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," seriously, I found it hard to understand; but I went steadily on reading it, although at times it annoyed me, when I was suffering, to come across some passage which would say that disease was only a belief. Often I have put the book down, and not looked at it for days; then after a few more days of suffering, I would feel I must try to read it again, as I knew of others who had been healed. After attending one or two of the testimony meetings, and seeing so many happy contented faces and hearing some of the simple and beautiful testimonies, it gave me courage to go on, and I found, as our dear Leader has said, that "to those leaning on the sustaining infinite today is big with blessings" (Science and Health, Preface, p. vii). For the last five years I have not taken any medicine or been to a doctor, and I am better and stronger than I have ever been. I am learning more and more every day that all God's promises are true, and the greatest joy in Science is when we get to recognize and know that God is omnipotent and ever present, as this enables us to overcome the fears and doubts that used to come up and force us to believe otherwise.
Christian Science is lifting suffering humanity above itself into a purer atmosphere of thought. We realize that there is a divine Principle "which is equal to every emergency" (Ibid., p. 406), and that the law of divine Love controls the universe. However feeble our efforts may seem to us at first, if they are honest they do most surely bring us peace and happiness, and we find it is useless to try to solve life's problems in a day. The Bible and Science and Health are my daily study. They have taught me to know God aright, and that He is our guide and helper in every hour of need. My greatest desire now is to put into practice the knowledge I have gained; then I shall be able to prove to myself as well as others that all things are possible to God today, if we are willing to do our part and follow our Master's teachings. I desire to be a channel which God will use in whatever way He may deem best for my growth; that I may learn to work with a fervent desire (God working with me) in this field of labor, where we shall all grow into the likeness of our Maker, and enter into that peace which passes understanding.
