THE LECTURES

A lecture on Christian Science was delivered by Bicknell Young March 24 in Saal des Konservatoriums, about five hundred people being present. Mr. Young was introduced by Henry Siegler of Lucerne, who spoke as follows:—

We are assembled here this evening to listen to a discourse on Christian Science. It is forty years and more since Mrs. Eddy discovered this Science and brought it to the notice of the world. Those who have taken any interest in matters religious know of the enormous difficulties she had to conquer, owing to prejudice, ignorance, and hatred. Happily things have altered; this new-found, old religion has grown so wonderfully and rapidly all over the world that thinking people, this side of the Atlantic, have for fifteen years taken a great interest in the movement, and therefore an exposition on the subject, coming from an authorixed and well-known speaker, may be welcomed by many and lay the foundation of future understanding for others.

It must be understood that Christian Scientists avoid proselyting, and that the main purpose of a lecture is to correct false opinions and statements, all of which can be done only by an authority. There are many people who believe, and I dare say they are right, that Mrs. Eddy's discovery and her courageous and unassailable defense of it has given the impulse to the increasing movement in religious matters for freedom from dogmas and fetters, in England, Germany, France, and even in this country; and it cannot be denied that she has worked to show to the world the way to perfect freedom.—Correspondence.
