FROM OUR EXCHANGES

[Universalist Leader.]

When the Christian world returns to reality in its theology, it will find that our spiritual liberty is guaranteed in the consciousness of its Prophet. It is only as we find him that we understand what he taught. His life is the true commentary on his words. The gospel is not an abstract formula. It is a living experience. It is incarnate truth. It is personality saturated with a consciousness of divine things. In him we live and move and have our being as Christians. When we say in the light of what he was that we will obey him and have no other Master, we have swept into the waste-basket of theology everything which sensible men desire to get rid of in their demand for spiritual liberty. The culture and the cosmopolitanism of the Christian world must humble themselves enough to understand that it is Christ's spirit that gives life to all his thoughts. It is the sweet fragrance of his character, the tender glow of his human sympathy, the divine pathos of his yearning love, the splendid joy of his greate consecration, the perfect peace of his fellowship with God, which are the spiritual dynamic and propelling energy of his gospel. In him the life is the truth and the truth is life.
