People become interested in Christian Science because they find in it health, strength, peace, and happiness, a right understanding of God and man which, despite their most earnest endeavors, they were unable to find elsewhere. They find through the study of Christian Science that God is a God at hand, and not afar off, and through this right relation to God the sick are healed, poverty is abolished, sin and evil destroyed. Because Christian Science does these things for those who earnestly seek its ministrations, they who have proved its beneficial effects rely on it confidently, to the exclusion of all other healing agencies.

Christian Science teaches, as does the Bible, that God is Spirit, and that the universe is spiritual,—"an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." St. John in Revelation saw this spiritual universe,—a new heaven and a new earth, in which there was no pain, sorrow, weeping, or death. Pain, sin, disease, evil are unreal in the sense that they are not a part of the spiritual universe, and will disappear as man comes to understand God aright. Jesus never let any one needlessly suffer who came meekly desiring to know God. He healed the sick of all manner of diseases, and nowhere does he teach that pain, sickness, or evil are needful in order to gain the kingdom of heaven. His ministry was to turn men to God and away from the carnal, mortal, and material, and in proportion as men make this separation between the false and the true do they gain the peace that Jesus promises as the rightful heritage of his followers, a peace in which pain is entirely eliminated.
