In February, 1906, I was taken ill with severe inflammation of the throat and lungs, and had hardly recovered when three weeks later rheumatism set in. The physician told my wife that my condition was a very serious one, but though he was very kind and tried to relieve me, he was unable to do so, and I was suffering terribly day and night. Several years before this we had heard of Christian Science, but when my wife now asked me if I wished to try that mode of treatment, I replied that I would rather wait. Soon after, however, the action of the heart grew very weak, and the physician told my wife that stimulants were needed for the action of the heart. She then asked me again whether we should not rather try Christian Science. This time I said I would, and we applied to a Christian Scientist for treatment. That evening my wife lay down peacefully, and I too had a good night's rest, and was sound asleep during the forenoon of the following day. This was the first refreshing sleep in a long while, and I had longed for it. On the second day I was able to tell a relative who inquired as to my condition, that I felt better. On the fourth day the practitioner called, and the next day I got up in the forenoon. I improved so rapidly that at the end of eleven days I was able to drive to the practitioner's from our home in one of the suburbs of Berlin. After two months I made a trip into the mountains and joined others on some tours, even up to a mountain about five thousand feet high. Five weeks later I returned in order to resume my office work.
For this wonderful healing I thank God from the depths of my heart. and I also thank our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for giving to us the truth which kept me from being separated from my wife and child. I read the Herold with a sense of gratitude and joy and attend the services and meetings, for which I am very grateful.
