FROM OUR EXCHANGES

[Christian World.]

If we believe that certain things happened in New Testament times because similar things happen now, it is evident that their miraculous character in the old sense is gone. If something done by a Christian Scientist helps us to believe that a similar thing was done by Jesus, it is evident that the latter does not prove the supernatural character of Jesus, any more than the former proves the supernatural character of the Christian Scientist.

Nothing is happening in the world of scientific discovery to rehabilitate the old idea of miracle, but much is happening to widen our knowledge of what is possible within the order of nature, and a good deal to confirm the faith that that order is spiritual and that nature is not mechanical but vital. In this wider view of nature we may find room for many New Testament stories which were once rejected, but they take their place, not as miracles, but as natural facts. We are coming to realize that the spiritual is as natural as the material, and much more so. The spiritual is in the ascendant in the faith of our time.
