With a heart overflowing with thankfulness to God, and...
With a heart overflowing with thankfulness to God, and gratitude to Mrs. Eddy, for the many blessings received in Christian Science, I write these few lines. After wearing glasses for many years, my eyesight became so poor that it was impossible for me to be fitted with other glasses. I suffered a great deal of pain in the eyes and head, and was unable to read or sew. At this time, when I was almost in despair, a dear friend told me of Christian Science, and I was healed in one treatment, so that the pain was entirely gone. I took off my glasses, and can now read the smallest print and sew all day long without any bad effect, through the knowledge which came to me that eyes mean "spiritual discernment" (Science and Health, p. 586).
Christian Science has been a wonderful help to me in every way. In December, 1909, my son (an only child) passed on, under materia medica. He was traveling when taken ill and was sent to a hospital, but I was able to be with him the last few days. If it had not been for the help of a dear practitioner during this awful time I could not have endured the trial. I have come to realize that God knows no separation, and that in His presence is "fulness of joy." I longed to do some work for God, and my prayer was answered. I invited a few Scientists to meet at my house, and we soon formed a Christian Science society. We have now a nice place on the main street, where we have regular services and Sunday school, and maintain a reading-room. The growth has been quite wonderful. When we began, we did not know where to look for readers, or a practitioner, but we found them right among our own members. At first they were afraid, but the thought came quickly that we of ourselves can do nothing, but that God can do all things. With this in thought we now have excellent readers.
It has been my glorious privilege to do some healing work, and in doing this work my sorrow has been turned into joy. I can indeed say that Love has given me "the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness."
