New York (N. Y.) Herald
Asserting his belief that disease, both organic and functional, may be cured by prayer, the Rev. Dr. Willard F. Ottarson, at Bethany Congregational church, 455 Tenth avenue, said yesterday [Nov. 5] that he had become convinced that Christian Scientists are right in their theory of healing.
"Death and disease could not be present in the world," said Dr. Ottarson, "if sin had not introduced them. It is a great and fundamental truth that all evil is the result of sin. The destruction of sin will rid us of death, disease, and every other evil. We all believe God can cleanse away sin, We also believe He can heal disease. We believe He does cleanse us of sin, but most of us do not yet definitely believe that He does heal disease. The apostles believed it. Christ cured all kinds of diseases and even restored the dead to life. I firmly believe the time will come when we can conquer disease by the aid of God as we now conquer sin."
Dr. Ottarson cited the case of his own sister, who, he said, was cured of a cancer by prayer. "She was a devout woman," he said, "and she continued to pray after her physicians had told her it was incurable. A small blemish on her face is all that remains. I know of a case of a well-known pastor afflicted with cancer. Eminent specialists had said he could not be cured. Christian Science was called upon, and after a course of prayer he was absolutely cured. Another case was of a woman whose lower limbs had been paralyzed for twenty years. A sister of a business man had been blind for three years. Christian Science restored her sight. A woman suffering from blood-poisoning tried Christian Science as a last resort. A physician, one of the most eminent in the East, had said she could not recover. After two weeks of treatment by prayer she was cured, and the physician announced that a repetition of such an incident would cause him to abandon practice."
