THE LECTURES
A lecture on Christian Science was delivered by Bicknell Young, member of the board of lectureship of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., at the Beethoven Saal Köthenerst. 32, Berlin, on Tuesday evening, Sept. 26, under the auspices of "Erste Kirche Christi des Scientisten, Berlin." There was a large, attentive, and earnest audience, whose sympathetic attitude toward the distinguished lecturer revealed the depth and strength of the Christian Science movement in Berlin. Dr. Carl Grauer, in introducing the lecturer, said:—
While the teachings of Christian Science, to the reader of the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, may appear clear because they are logically correct, being evolved from generally acknowledged hypotheses, the truth of this teaching must however be even more strongly acknowledged, if it is possible to produce practical proofs of its validity. After the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy, had repeatedly proved the correctness of her systematically compiled knowledge, which she had gained from the study of the Bible, she was entitled to name her teaching "Science;" and because she founded her attained knowledge on the teaching of Jesus Christ, to name it "Christian Science."
Christian Science like natural science does not demand blind belief, but like all other scientific systems it bases the truth of its teachings on proofs, and just on this fact rests the great importance of this new yet old religion; through the study and application of which an ever growing trust in it is gained, and this is founded on the increasing proofs through which the correctness of its teachings is constantly being supported and strengthened, and because of this trust the rapid increase of adherents to this religion becomes explicable. Any one who has been healed of some physical ailment, and has further been privileged to experience through Christian Science the freedom from moral and mental disharmony, has the desire to know more of Christian Science. "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings." It is with this sentence that Mrs. Eddy begins the Preface of her text-book, and as a matter of fact, were all those who already have received such blessings through Christian Science assembled in one spot, and if to each should be allotted only a moment's time, it would last indefinitely to hear all those who had experienced the blessed influence which this teaching has brought to them. Also in our midst are many who could rise and testify to the profound importance which Christian Science has become to them in their lives. There will also be many here who would like to hear some particulars on this vital subject; therefore we all are glad of this renewed opportunity to hear a coherent lecture on Christian Science, and welcome most heartily the speaker of the evening.—Continental Times.
