AMONG THE CHURCHES

The beautiful new Christian Science church at the corner of Eighteenth and Vermont streets was crowded yesterday [Sept. 3] at both morning and evening services, with members of the society and its friends, who came to view the handsome interior of the edifice and participate in the interesting and impressive service. It was a representative Quincy audience at both services, which were identical, people coming from all parts of the city.

The historic sketch of the church as read at both services was very interesting. It was in part as follows:—

The first formal organization of Christian Science adherents in Quincy was June 30, 1889. In September, 1891, this society was organized and incorporated under the state law of Illinois as "Quincy Church of Christ, Scientist." Eighteen persons signed their names as first members, two of whom were students of Mrs. Eddy. On Jan. 4, 1896, by vote of its members, the name was changed to "First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Quincy, Illinois." In October, 1905, a committee was appointed to look about for a suitable location for building purposes. It was found that the present site, which seemed most desirable to the committee, could be bought for one thousand two hundred and fifty dollars, and the lot was purchased and the first payment made Nov. 18, 1905.
