DEMANDING A CHANGE OF EVIDENCE

Mary Baker Eddy writes concerning Jesus in her book "Unity of Good" (p. 11), "He demanded a change of consciousness and evidence, and effected this change through the higher laws of God." Then she expounds the fact that Jesus did not allow sense evidence or mortal mind opinion to influence or interfere with what he knew to be his God-directed work of healing sickness and sin and of overcoming the so-called laws of matter. At no time in the brief history of our Master did he fail to realize his God-given dominion over every material situation.

When thousands followed him into the desert place, where his great love for the multitudes was expressed in his healing of their various diseases, he did not allow suggestions of weariness and confusion to enter his thinking. When the disciples suggested sending the multitudes away because there were no means at hand to care for so many, he said (Luke 9:13), "Give ye them to eat."

His next admonition, to make them sit down, showed his right expectancy and his understanding of Truth's immediacy. This expectancy resulted in God's providing for the human need, which, in this case, was food. Many times the need was for healing, both physical and mental, and it was always supplied. Jesus spoke the truth which was true then and there, ever had been true, and ever will be true. He spoke the truth with authority because of his understanding of "the higher laws of God." He ever knew God and man as Principle and idea, Love and its immediate reflection.
