Overcoming the Illusion of Personal Sense

The beginner in the study of Christian Science usually feels that his needs are for physical healing, financial security, or some other human adjustment. But as he continues in his study he learns that his real need is for spiritual understanding and spiritual healing. He needs to be aware of, and to express, qualities such as humility, love, joy, tolerance, wisdom.

Personal sense may still hold before him the beliefs of fear, lack, sadness, depression, self-righteousness, self-justification, and many other unlovely and unwanted traits. As he progresses in the understanding of his God-given dominion over all untoward conditions, he may at times be discouraged by the tenacity of the errors which claim recognition. This is because he is thinking of error as personal to him, rather than as a false claim of personal sense. On page 67 of "Retrospection and Introspection" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Sin existed as a false claim before the human concept of sin was formed; hence one's concept of error is not the whole of error." Mortal thoughts seem to present false claims, and will continue to do so until mortal error is wholly destroyed by Truth.

But if one is learning to purify his thoughts through increased spirituality, he will not be distracted from his true purpose to reflect the divine nature. His strength lies in knowing that man is inseparable from God, Mind, and that there can be no stepping beyond the divine allness; and he strives to demonstrate this truth of being.
