The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Lakewood, Ohio (First Church).
Lecturer: Mrs. Louise Knight Wheatley Cook; introduced by Mrs. Katherine Shepard Whitney, who said:—
Christian Science teaches us better to understand and prove the promises of the Bible. This understanding is a help to us in every circumstance and with any problem that may seem to arise. Among the beautiful promises of the Bible is this: "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear."
Last summer, while traveling in the West, we stopped at a private home for the night. During the night a great need for help arose. Through the teachings of Christian Science I knew that God was right there with me to help me, and that God is Life and Love. After I had declared these truths audibly for a few moments, the occasion seemed to require human assistance. Twice I called out, but no human being in that house came or was even aroused; but God did hear, for instantly the condition cleared. Ever-present good was manifested to me, and harmony was restored. This was an instantaneous healing. The remainder of the night was peaceful, and the following day we arose at the usual time and drove throughout the day. Christian Science provides many avenues for all to receive this healing understanding.
Cambridge, Massachusetts (Organization at Harvard University).
Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Wilbur Myron Jones, who said:—
During our university careers we have studied many textbooks, but we have found only one that is capable of presenting the correct solution, whether the problem seems to be physical, financial, or mental. This book is "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It contains the system of Mind-healing practiced and demonstrated by Christ Jesus.
The fact that Christian Science is demonstrable appeals to the student. The testimonies at our meetings speak of the fruitage of this practical religion, for one hears there the students bear witness to the beneficial results of the application of this Science to their everyday needs.
Stockholm, Sweden (First Church).
Lecturer: Francis Lyster Jandron; introduced by Mrs. Anna Christell, who said:—
We read in the Bible that Jesus, in talking to his disciples, said: "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
Our great Master, who declared, "I am the way," proved this in casting out sin, in feeding the multitudes, in raising the dead, and in healing all manner of disease in direct opposition to the methods of mortal mind—the wisdom of the world. This Jesus did by knowing and demonstrating the allness of God, good, Spirit, and the dominion of the law of God over the so-called laws of matter.
It is now about fifteen years since I began to study the Bible, together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and in the light of Christian Science I have regained my lost faith in God as Love. I began to understand that all the problems of the world—showing themselves as cruelty and suffering, calamities and disasters—are not sent by our Father-Mother God, who is ever-present Love. On the contrary, they seem to exist because the carnal mind is ignorant of the fact that the real universe is governed by divine Principle, Love, Mind.
I am indeed grateful that I have been led to this wonderful Science. It has brought into my life many blessings—better health, more joy and harmony—and I have experienced and witnessed many healings.
We have gathered here tonight in order to learn of this new-old truth, which makes men free.
Hollis, New York (Society).
Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Alfred M. Valdes, who said:—
In the Gospel of St. John we read of a promise and hope given to us by our Master, Christ Jesus. He said, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."
To all who are seeking divine guidance in their daily lives, these words are indeed a comfort. Christian Science teaches us that when a belief in sin, disease, lack, or any of the discomforts of mortal mind confronts us, we have but to turn to divine Mind, God, for an answer to our problem. This we can all learn to do as certainly as we can learn the rules of mathematics and then prove them in proportion to our knowledge.
In the year 1875 Mary Baker Eddy gave to the world the first edition of the Christian Science textbook. In this inspired writing Mrs. Eddy gives us a clear understanding of the Scriptures and positive rules whereby we can apply the law of God to our daily experiences. Thousands have proved for themselves and to the world that Christian Science is indeed a great comfort and blessing. On page 55 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes: "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science."
Fort Collins, Colorado (First Church).
Lecturer: Colin Rucker Eddison; introduced by Harry G. Finley, who said:—
In my own experience I witnessed the healing through Christian Science of a member of my family, who had spent many years in search of health. Enjoying excellent health myself, I did not become a student until the business I headed became hopelessly ill with the claim of depression, and it was suggested that divine Principle could heal a sick business as well as a sick person. One of the first things I read was the Tenets (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 497), the first one of which reads, "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." This meant that I must become an earnest student of the Bible. It was soon after, when I was studying the ministry of Jesus as recorded by Mark, where the Master said, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel," that the way to study this great Book was made clear. I found that recognized authorities said that a literal translation of the orginal Greek, given in our version of the Bible as "repent," is to "change one's mind." Then, if I were to believe the gospel, I must change my way of thinking. I did so, and as a result the past four years have been the most profitable and enjoyable of my whole life.
Mrs. Eddy issues this significant challenge (Science and Health, p. 130): "If thought is startled at the strong claim of Science for the supremacy of God, or Truth, and doubts the supremacy of good, ought we not, contrariwise, to be astounded at the vigorous claims of evil and doubt them, and no longer think it natural to love sin and unnatural to forsake it,—no longer imagine evil to be ever-present and good absent?"
Mattoon, Illinois (First Church).
Lecturer: Peter B. Biggins; introduced by Val Gaertner, who said:—
A Christian Science lecture is indeed a joyous occasion and has as its objective a twofold purpose: first, it dispels ignorance by erasing confused and false notions about Christian Science; secondly, it emits light by revealing the true facts about God and man's relationship to Him. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, tells us in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 72), "As light destroys darkness and in the place of darkness all is light, so (in absolute Science) Soul, or God, is the only truth-giver to man."
I have had many healings through the study and application of the Christ-Science. While attending high school I became obsessed with the desire to smoke. I accepted this false desire as a pleasure, and continued to indulge in it for several years. Finally the realization came that I must over-come this false appetite, because our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, tells us (Science and Health, p. 454) that "the use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science." One evening while I was reading the Christian Science Sentinel, my thought was so enlightened that I was immediately lifted out of bondage to this habit, and there has been no return of this erroneous desire.
