[Original testimony in German]
In former years I had the habit of smoking while reading...
In former years I had the habit of smoking while reading or writing When, however, I began to study earnestly "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, something about my previous concept of smoking seemed to be awry. I had a feeling that the cigar did not fit in with this activity and only disturbed me while I studied. But, in particular, the previous joy and pleasure in smoking were not forthcoming, in spite of the fact that I tried to overcome this lack with better quality cigars. Meanwhile I continued to read the textbook daily, and after a short time I no longer had the slightest desire for tobacco. Since then I have been a nonsmoker. With great expectancy and heartfelt joy I took up the incomparable book by Mrs. Eddy early each morning, incidentally also devoting more time and attention to the Scriptures than formerly, and I found the way through the numerous tasks of life. Dozens, yes, hundreds of questions came up in my regular and eager reading, and they seemed bent on hindering my grasp of fundamentals and my understanding. I am convinced, however, that without this struggle, without this selfless and consecrated study, and without the practical proof of Truth in physical healing, no one is justified or able to judge Christian Science rightly.
A chronic, painful heart trouble—a legacy, as it seemed to me, of the long years of war—had settled on me with its numerous annoying manifestations and had made my life a hell. As I did not know about Christian Science at that time, I turned to doctors for help and release. Their efforts were unsuccessful—indeed, they rather resembled experimentation—although at that time I was an obedient and trusting patient as regards the medical profession. It often seemed as if my thread of life were cut off and existence in this world had come to an end. From this unhappy situation the practical proof of Christian Science rescued me. I have Christian Science to thank that today I am again able and active, that I can again jump, engage in athletics, ride a bicycle, lift loads, and stand all day long; even a long day's work cannot tire me as a short one formerly did; I can attend to my business every day fresh and vigorous; in short, I am a help rather than a burden to my fellow men. In the years which have followed I have often had occasion in my personal experience to see and observe the manifold applicability of Christian Science. Results have not been lacking. Through Christian Science alone is it possible to perceive the omnipotence and inviolability of the divine, and to grow into one's true and rightful selfhood.
Anything better than Christian Science mankind does not have. Whoever touches the hem of its garment gives thanks and gives glory to God. May it be kept pure!
