[Written for the Sentinel]

Silent Prayer

We bowed our heads,
And in the silence sweet
There came a sense of gratitude,
With joy and love replete.

Into each heart
God's loving-kindness stole,
Blending our cleansed thoughts with His
In one harmonious whole.

Just as a ray
Before whose presence bright
The darkness flees, the gloom departs,
And all again is light,

So Spirit quelled
Dark thoughts of fear and sin,
The rays of His eternal love
Purging our hearts within.

We did not doubt;
Our greatest need to know
That God, whose presence is at hand,
Can only good bestow.

We rose refreshed
From this communion pure,
With faith uplifted, hearts at rest
Upon His promise sure.
