On Searching the Scriptures

That Mary Baker Eddy discovered in the Bible the truth she termed "Christian Science" is becoming generally recognized. In her work "Retrospection and Introspection" are recounted the experiences that led to this revelation. And "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy has designed to be a commentary on the Bible, thus indicating the foundational position of the Word of God in this Science.

A perusal of Mrs. Eddy's writings will reveal the fact that she invariably accords precedence to the Bible throughout her teachings. Yet, occasionally, one finds the neophyte in Christian Science reversing this order by studying Science and Health assiduously and giving the Bible but cursory attention, with the excuse that the Bible never has appealed to him, that it is difficult to understand, and that he does not see how the ancient compilation can be related to his everyday experiences.

But if we consider the life of Jesus, our Exemplar, as recorded by his disciples, we find that even he turned to the Old Testament Scriptures for the solution of daily difficulties, and that in what is known as the temptation in the wilderness, that quintessence of problems, he depended, according to Matthew, on the Scriptures for aid. In this instance it is evident that Jesus recalled the experience of the children of Israel in the wilderness, and remembered the moral law that extricated them; for he antidoted each aggressive suggestion of evil with the words that Moses had given the Israelites when they passed through temptation centuries before.
