Over twenty years ago "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
Over twenty years ago "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was put into my hands for the first time. I did not know that it contained healing in its leaves, nor that through the reading of this "little book" my longing to know God aright would be answered. Inconsolable over the sudden death of an only child, ill from a periodical attack of chronic dyspepsia of the stomach and intestines of ten years' duration, I was scarcely in a state of health to make a trip to New York city, which I deferred while I read a portion of the book and returned it.
I started at the chapter on Prayer; and as I turned each leaf I joyfully declared it contained the truth, saying, "This is what I have searched and prayed for; this book is God-inspired!" As I accepted this "bread of heaven," the spiritual food so leavened thought that all fermentation and dysentery disappeared, and they have never returned. I had dreaded the railroad trip because all previous journeys had been accompanied by train sickness from beginning to end; but this excursion was the first to be traveled in health and with the comfort of being able to eat the food of which I had been afraid. For over twenty years I have given no thought of fear to food of any kind. My digestion is normal and healthy.
In later years I was puzzled as to a seeming curtain of obscurity, a blank wall that shut out those three precious chapters of Science and Health that had healed me. For eight years I wandered from one Protestant church to another seeking the beautiful truth which had seemed to elude me. Finally, to mortal sense, I was stricken with nervous prostration; then my generous-hearted sister, who was still of my old faith, said to me, "Don't you remember you were healed years ago by the reading of that little book?" I had to have the help of a practitioner this time, and I was healed by absent treatment; and since then I have continued to lay hold of this priceless truth. Class instruction has since made plain to me the name of that which may seem to attack the honest, earnest thought in its warfare with evil.
