Signs of the Times

The Fourth of July is one of the greatest days in human history. It marks the practical application of an old truth that all men are created equal. The statement of this truth in the Declaration of Independence was so simple and straightforward that it has guided men through their trials for many generations. ... Truth in its essence is simple. Applying it in the complexities of human life is a difficult and sometimes a seemingly impossible task. The greatness of the men who wrote this truth in the immortal Declaration lay in their ability to bring it home to the hearts of the whole world. There is a need of simple and straightforward thinking. It requires courage to say at the proper time what ought to be said. This our forefathers possessed. It explains why they were able to put thought into action. It is for us in this present day and generation to realize and assume in every action, that rights carry with them responsibilities, and that he is the best citizen who not only upholds his rights, but lives up to his obligations.
