About six years ago I was persuaded, with some misgivings, to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. That was the beginning of more health and happiness than I had ever hoped to possess. I quickly found in that book light on many problems of religion which had remained unsolved in thought for many years. The wonderful common sense of the book attracted me, and I wanted to believe it. So I resolved to study the text thoroughly with dictionary and Bible at hand, and if I found nothing I could not reconcile with Bible teaching, to go to the local Christian Science church and send the children to the Sunday school. The result of earnest, diligent study for about four months was an almost complete healing of general poor health.

I had been extremely nervous and fearful of everything, also far from strong or energetic. I had to lie down a great deal, had painful arches, daily headaches which often became violent, and there were indications of inherited organic disease. But one main trouble underlying my unhappiness was defective sight. One of two pairs of glasses was constantly in use, and yet, sewing, reading, writing, and all kindred occupations were very painful to me, forcing the family to try to spare me any work requiring good sight. But these occupations were the dearest pleasures of my life. Also, it did not seem advisable to get on a street car or go downtown alone, on account of sightless spells or dizziness. The trouble was called a bad case of astigmatism, but, in later years, even the sight of the good eye was very weak. This defective vision was completely healed during my studies, and I was shown in a remarkable way that I did not need to use glasses. I have not used them at all since that time, and have been able to go back to all the old pursuits with renewed energy, also with no pain or headaches. Most of the other troubles were banished at the same time or shortly after, including a lifelong tendency to train-sickness.

A very delicate throat took longer to heal completely. At each attack a practitioner was asked for help, and study was begun. Almost at once this trouble seemed to be only a matter of a day or two, instead of weeks as formerly. The fear of these attacks gradually vanished, and now the throat and connected passages are strong and well.
