Letters from the Field

[From a report of the Christian Science Prison Committee for the State of New Jersey]

A meeting in the interest of the Christian Science work in the penal institutions of New Jersey, was attended by representatives from about two thirds of the Christian Science churches and societies in the state. Gratifying reports of the work carried on in the state prison at Trenton during the past year were given. Letters from some of the men who had experienced healing in their study of Christian Science were read. All present were impressed with the practical character of the work in ministering to the needs of the men and their families, many of whom had subsequently become earnest students of Christian Science and members of the church. The men paroled in the care of the New York committee have been assisted in securing employment; and according to the records, eighty-six per cent of them have made good, and have become useful members of society.

One of the men who attend our service each sunday writes: "How many of us are prone to go along satisfied with our material accomplishments, giving little or no thought to our spiritual welfare. After wasting thirty-four years of my life, my present predicament has brought me to the stern realization of the necessity of spiritual understanding. When I thought the sun of my life had gone down, never to rise, I found the way in attending the Christian Science services. I was so impressed with the simple but very beautiful service that this feeling disappeared, and I now see life differently and am taking in the wonderful truth of this teaching as fast as I am ready to receive it. I am grateful to say that I have been healed of using profane language and of the desire to be untruthful, and am positively healed of the desire to steal."
