Obedience

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 495), "God will heal the sick through man, whenever man is governed by God."

On every Christian Scientist rests the charge of ministering to others; for Jesus bade his followers to go into all the world and preach the gospel and heal the sick. He also said, "I am the way;" and that Way, as unfolded in the life of our Master, was a constant willingness to act in obedience to the Father, an unceasing denial of every false claim of human will. His obedience to divine Mind and his rejection of mortal sense testimony demonstrated his at-one-ment with God. It was the Christ, defined by Mrs. Eddy on page 583 of the textbook as "the divine manifestation of God, which comes to the flesh to destroy incarnate error," which was demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth in healing the sick. Therefore, in order to follow the steps of our Master in helping others, we must cast from our thoughts human fear, self-will, and human outlining, and seek to gain a clearer understanding of God's omnipotence. Then we can truly serve; for then God directs our way.

Let us learn, when besieged by doubt and fear, to listen for the "still small voice" which follows the storm of mortal error, saying, "Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." Sometimes a sense of confusion may result from trying to force on another a forward step for which he is not ready. Like busybodies, we may be trying so hard to guide him to Truth that we neglect to keep our own path clear. It is well then to remember that God has opened the way for us to come into our present understanding, step by step, and that divine Love, and not our human planning, will also guide all others. In proportion to our own fidelity to divine Principle we shall be able to help others who seek the truth.
