The Christian Science church was founded by Mrs. Eddy to "reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual, p. 17). Christian Science is therefore a continuance of the teaching and practice of Christ Jesus. "Shall it be denied," writes Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 342), "that a system which works according to the Scriptures has Scriptural authority?"

Christian Science claims to be scientific in that its healing works result from the operation of a known law. The fact that this law is spiritual and reliable breaks down the old saying, "Science ends where faith begins," which was never satisfactory; nor was it consistent with the teaching of him who said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

The claim of Christian Scientists to have their own church is not ecclesiastical, but spiritual. Thousands upon thousands of men and women from every station in life, and in every part of the civilized world, are finding in this church a haven of refuge from the uncertainty and conflict of human doctrines, as well as from the bondage of physical suffering.
