A few years ago, while at a hotel in the mountains, I...

A few years ago, while at a hotel in the mountains, I undertook to close the transom over the door of my room while standing on a chair. As I reached up to the transom, the chair tilted, causing me to lose my balance and fall, coming down with full force and striking my chest across the back of the chair. My companion came to my assistance, for I was unable to speak or breathe. She placed me on a bed, and loosened my clothing. When finally able to breath, I became aware of a sharp pain and a feeling of being terribly bruised and shaken. There were no practitioners in the place, nor even a Christian Scientist, so far as we knew, my companion having tried to find one. While she was seeking for help in this way, leaving me helpless, seemingly, on the bed, it came to me that I must have help at once. Beside me on a little table was a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I was just able to reach for it with one hand, and it opened at page 397, where my eyes fell on the following statements: "When an accident happens, you think or exclaim, 'I am hurt!' Your thought is more powerful than your words, more powerful than the accident itself, to make the injury real. Now reverse the process. Declare that you are not hurt and understand the reason why, and you will find the ensuing good effects to be in exact proportion to your disbelief in physics, and your fidelity to divine metaphysics, confidence in God as All, which the Scriptures declare Him to be." The word "understand" stood out like a revelation; and I did understand that I was not hurt, because God's child, God's spiritual, perfect idea, had never fallen, been hurt, bruised, or fearful. I realized that matter could have no sensation, and that it was but my mortal thinking which told me I was unable to arise. When my friend returned to the room to report that no practitioner could be found, I was perfectly healed, and nearly dressed for dinner.

For this one experience, even were there no others, I wish to express profound gratitude to God, and to the wonderful woman, Mrs. Eddy, who was able to write a book containing healing in every line! There have been many other proofs of the healing power of Christian Science in my experience, physical, mental, and financial, in the many years I have been a student of its teachings; and my gratitude is unbounded.
