[Written for the Sentinel]

Had I the Mind of Christ

Had I the Mind of Christ,
How changed the world would be!
No longer then would sin or fear
Within my heart strange phantoms rear;
But I would feel Love's presence near,
Had I the Mind of Christ.

Had I the Mind of Christ,
I'd love my fellow-man,
And joy if I perchance might share
His griefs, his burdens, or his care,
Or stand when taunts of evil dare,—
Had I the Mind of Christ.

Had I the Mind of Christ,
No discords could I know,
For I should have the strength and grace
To spurn suggestions that debase,
And from my grateful heart efface
All thoughts unlike the Christ.

Had all the Mind of Christ,
God's kingdom would be here;
Then wearied hearts would joyous be,
As they through light of Love would see
That, truly, one with God is he
Who has the Mind of Christ.
