[Written for the Sentinel]

Sunrise

I Saw , in early morning, when the dew
Was dripping from the tender bloom of May,
And moist-winged birds soft fluttered to the day,
The stars grow dim and tremble from the blue,
As shadows passed and twilight rosy grew.
How gladly hailed I then the first pale gray
That ushered dawn, in wonderful array
Of gorgeous clouds, bringing the sun anew!
O Love, that shines away the darkness deep,
That knows and visions all things near and far,
Eternal light from the eternal One,
Awakened by Thy call from lingering sleep,
We see the brightness of the morning star
Lost in the splendors of Thy rising sun.
