The Scriptures

In Paul's epistle to Timothy we read, "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." Again, in the second epistle of Peter it is written: "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." These verses teach pointedly the divine origin of the Scriptures. God, through His great love and goodness, has been self-revealed, and the Scriptures are the result of this revelation: "Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." Since the truth revealed is of God, and forever in His keeping, the truth contained in the Scriptures is sustained by Him, to accomplish that whereunto it is sent.

It is well known that at different periods throughout the centuries mankind has striven to destroy the Scriptures; but every such endeavor has failed, because they are under the protection of the Most High, their truth and immortality being in God, who abideth forever. A number of people, however, who profess to be Christians, seem to doubt the truthfulness of the Scriptures. This is probably because they have not rightly understood them. To use the words of Mrs. Eddy to be found in Science and Health (p. 319): "The divine Science taught in the original language of the Bible came through inspiration, and needs inspiration to be understood."

Mary Baker Eddy, through her obedience and consecration to God, gave to the world the priceless volume, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." In speaking of her revelation of Truth she says, on page 110 of this book: "In following these leadings of scientific revelation, the Bible was my only textbook. The Scriptures were illumined; reason and revelation were reconciled, and afterwards the truth of Christian Science was demonstrated. No human pen nor tongue taught me the Science contained in this book, SCIENCE AND HEALTH; and neither tongue nor pen can overthrow it."
