THE LECTURES
The lecture on Christian Science given by Bliss Knapp in the roof garden of the Manila hotel, was attended by a large and representative gathering of Manilans, who gave the speaker the closest attention. The introductory speech, by Judge George R. Harvey, was as follows:—
Our presence here this afternoon is evidence of the fact that we want to know the truth about Christian Science. I am not a member of the Christian Science church, but have given considerable study to its teachings, and I am deeply impressed by them. Christian Science not only points to the promises contained in the Holy Scriptures, but shows exactly how these promises are made available to each and every one of us. The fact that Christian Science has had such a remarkable growth in a few years, and has won the enthusiastic approval of so many thinking people, is proof positive of merit, and it is good for all of us to become informed as to its real teachings.
Christian Science does not attempt to build up its cause by making war on other Christian denominations. Mrs. Eddy, the Founder of the Christian Science church, counseled her followers to "love all Christian churches for the gospel's sake; and be exceedingly glad that the churches are united in purpose, if not in method" (Christian Science vs. Pantheism, p. 13). We learn from the Bible that Jesus of Nazareth, during his brief ministry on earth, went about doing good, healing the sick and the sinning and doing other wonderful works. He commanded his disciples to preach the gospel and heal the sick, and said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;" and he admonished them, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." Christian Scientists believe that the command of Jesus to heal the sick is as imperative as his command to preach the gospel, and that both should be obeyed by all Christian people.—Cable News American.
