[Pacific Christian Advocate.]

Jesus in the darkness comes to the disciples walking on the water. He appears to be an evil spirit. They are terrified. But he is their dear Lord and Master; Master, too, of sea and land, with all the power in heaven and earth to press elements and forces into harmony with the best interests of those who trust him. This same Master comes with complete relief to a country where a man was afficted with a legion of demons. Those cast-out demons are permitted to enter a herd of swine, which rush headlong down the hillside and are drowned in the sea. The owners of the swine cannot see the worth of the man. Their loss looms more largely on their horizon than the proof to them that "the desire of all nations" is among them, working demonstrations of his character, showing to them and to all the ages to come that one sorely afflicted man fully restored to health and quietly sitting at the feet of Jesus is not only of more "value than many sparrows," but of greater worth also than thousands of herded swine, and in alarm they beseech him to depart from among them. Their hogs and their profits are dearer to them than the restoration of a neighbor in life-long and dreadful torment and the staying with them for a season of One mighty to save. Translated into terms of modern materialism their doctrine was, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." Pigs with a fixed commercial value are preferable to a mysterious visitor over whose character the authorities of Jerusalem are disputing and whose further tarrying is a menace to their business interests.
